Sussex Wing Air Training Corps
Communications Training Team
This is an optional module.
When a cadet is also using the HF Operator module as part of the Communicator Badge then hours logged as an HF Operator may not be used for this module nor may hours logged as a listener be used to support an application for the HF Operator module.
Some units don't have access to HF transmitting equipment or instructors licensed to use it. This module was introduced to enable cadets in these circumstance to get involved with HF work in spite of this.
The High Frequency (HF) radio system is generally used for long distance communication. Even on relatively low powers it is possible to speak to other operators over hundreds and thousands of miles. Because of this, access to the HF bands is very tightly controlled and licensed worldwide by government agencies. Listening to the HF frequencies, in most circumstances, is perfectly legal even without a licence but some communications are protected by law.
The cadet should demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practical aspects of HF Communications to the satisfaction of the Squadron Communications Instructor.
Either
or
Whichever option is used, the cadet must also show a working knowledge of HF operating, aerials, frequency spectrum and propagation.
