VHF/UHF Operator

Background Information

This is the second of the two compulsory modules. Cadets who have completed the first module (ACP31 vol 6) progress onto this topic.

This is the basic qualification that all cadets and staff should be expected to achieve.

Once the certificate has been awarded, cadets are authorised to use transceivers, unsupervised, on other activities such as adventurous training or in support of community events such as air shows and carnivals.

This level of training used to be in two parts, the Provisional VHF/UHF Certificate and the Full VHF/UHF Certificate, but the first of these no longer attracts an HQAC certificate.

Training Objective

The Cadet should be able to operate VHF/UHF radio unsupervised to the satisfaction of the Wing Radio & Communications Officer who may delegate responsibility to the Squadron Communications Instructor.

Enabling Objectives:

To have a satisfactory knowledge of:

  • The Phonetic Alphabet and Numbers
  • Prowords
  • Communications Security
  • Use and care of batteries
  • Safety in the Radio room and in the field
  • Aerials
  • Frequencies in use
  • Power output restrictions
  • The type of equipment and frequencies inĂ‚ use on the squadron

To be aware of:

  • Operating ranges of equipment in use
  • Talk through operation (Community Repeaters)

To demonstrate the use of, over a period of time:

  • Log keeping
  • Voice procedures
