Sussex Wing Air Training Corps
Communications Training Team
The training you will receive is broken down into modules. On the completion of each stage you achieve a qualification, the details of which are entered in your records. Some modules also attract an Air Cadet Organisation award issued by Headquarters Air Cadets and carrying the Commandant Air Cadets' signature.
The basic module, ACP31 vol 6, is a required part of recruit training for all Air Cadets. It's your first step on the way to becoming a fully trained communicator.

The completion of the VHF/UHF module is marked by the award of the Radio Operator's Certificate and enables cadets to operate unit radio equipment unsupervised. Such cadets are also permitted to directly support local charitable and public events as part of the ACO's work in the community. Cadets who complete the HF operator are also awarded the Radio Operator's certificate and are able to operate the unit's long-range HF equipment unsupervised.

Successful completion of the whole scheme leads to the award of the Communicator badge and the Communicator certificate. Only about 100 of these are awarded each year making them quite prestigious and highly valued. Sussex Wing has won more of these than all other REGIONS as well as individual wings!

The Communicator Badge can count as the basis for a skill at all levels of the DoE Scheme. The course starts at Squadron level with First Class training and progresses through the other five modules to achieve the award of a Communicator badge. Including the radio and other communications activities carried out at local level plus activities such as Shoreham Airshow means that 18 to 24 months may be counted. If you want to take advantage of this, discuss it with the Squadron DoE Officer and mention it to the Course Co-ordinator when you attend one of our courses. After the relevant time has elapsed, and you've made the required progress, the Course Co-ordinator will sign-off the topic in your record book.
By the time a cadet completes the whole Communicator Badge course they will typically have achieved:
The Communicator Badge & Certificate awarded by Headquarter Air Cadets
The VHF/UHF Full Radio Operator Certificate
Two written exams to be counted towards Senior or Staff Cadet
A skill to be counted toward the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme
Up to 24 'Project Hours'
