
Sussex Wing Air Training Corps 
Communications Training Team
The Sussex Wing Communications Training Team (its posh name) is a group of volunteers who have come together to provide communications training in support of the general aims of the Air Training Corps. The team leader is the Sussex Wing Radio & Communications Officer.

Sgt Tom BagleyTom is a member of 2530 (Uckfield) Squadron where he was promoted to Sergeant in January 2012. He has been awarded his OC's Certificate of Commendation for his work with Radio Communication in support of both Squadron and Wing activities. Tom has been involved in the planning, and setting up of equipment to provide comms support for a wide range of events, Squadron and Wing, and has acted as Duty Network Controller at most of the events the team supports. He has also acted as Comms Coordinator for the 15 control points around the Uckfield Carnival. With the team, Tom acts as a general instructor in support of practical training exercises. In the real world he is a student at Uckfield College. |

CI (Flt Lt ret'd) David CalvertABIPP M3DSODavid is the deputy team leader. He started in 1996 as a CI with 54DF and later became CO when it was re-designated as 249 Sqn. He was a founder member of the comms team and specialises in Satellite Communications and the practical radio exercises and is a qualified Amateur Radio operator. He also acts as comms co-ordinator for the link between sites at the Wing Field Weekend. In the real world he was a photographic scientist and college lecturer. Currently he works in the county's historical archives. |

Flt Sgt (ATC) Tina CalvertM3HMXTina is the courses administrator. She joined the ATC in 2001 as a CI with 249 (Hailsham) Squadron and in 2003 she joined the recently formed Radio Training Team. Tina is a qualified Amateur Radio operator, a qualification gained whilst a member of the team, and has worked with the Regional Radio Team on HF Training weekends at St Martins Plain. In 2004 she decided to go into uniform as a Sgt (ATC) and was promoted to Flight Sergeant in 2008. With the team, she has lectured and run practical radio sessions. She is also the Radio Officer for 249 (Hailsham) Squadron and oversees the comms support for the start of the Southdowns Challenge. On courses she is also responsible for administration and logistics throughout the day. |

CI Roger DoveRoger, ex member of Yorkshire Gliding Club and a PPL holder, has been involved with the ATC since1998. He joined 611 (RAF Woodvale) Sqn as H&S advisor and became Radio Officer in 2000. When he moved to East Sussex in 2007 he joined 2530 (Uckfield) Sqn as Radio Officer and, shortly after, joined the team. With the team he specialises in operations and technical skills as well as overseeing the Uckfield Carnival and Edenbridge Show comms support. In the real world Roger worked in a large retail organisation and was Liverpool City Centre Manager for two years. |

CI (Sqn Ldr ret'd) Howard ToonBA CertEd MBCS CISP CITP MiFL M1AES M3CCFHoward is the website manager. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch) in 1979 and promoted immediately to Flight Lieutenant. He was further promoted to Squadron Leader in 1993. He retired from the RAFVR(T) in 2006, after working with the Combined Cadet Force RAF Section for 25 years, and became a Civilian Instructor (CI) with 226 (Brighton) Squadron ATC. He holds a full amateur radio licence and is a qualified instructor & assessor on amateur and marine radio courses. With the team he specialises in cryptography and the internet module, oversees the Shoreham Air Show comms support and co-ordinates the South Downs Challenge support. In the real world Howard was a Production Planner and a School Master. He is now retired but does part-time IT teaching. |
